Is Working at Home Right For You?
49Find out if you are built to work for yourself
Many people would love to realize the dream of working at home. Unfortunately, working from home is not for everyone. If you are wondering which side of the fence you fall on, here are a few things you can ask yourself…
Are you looking for a steady paycheck? Most work at home jobs are short term and in fact will not turn out a steady paycheck. Usually, these short term assignments are intended for those who are looking to supplement their income since they don’t really pay a lot. Paychecks tend to be irregular as you search for multiple opportunities to work on.
Do you have the required skills? Most work at home jobs require specific, high-level skills. You cannot become a bookkeeper, an engineer, or a graphic designer overnight.
Do you have the time required to work at home? Some of us do, some of us don’t. When you are able to work at home, you actually put more hours in than if you were to work elsewhere. Balancing your family’s needs can become a challenge. With your job right in front of you at all times, you may end up spending some weekends working instead of playing.
Are you an independent worker? Working from home requires the ability to work and be successful without supervision. Yep. No boss to remind you to finish your reports. No boss to nag you for being late. It can be difficult to stay on task when there are so many other things you can be doing at home. You must be able to set your own hours and get all of your work done.
Are you a social butterfly? Some people love the outside work environment and being social is necessary for them to thrive. Working at home can get very lonely at times.
Can you forgo your benefits? Many people simply cannot afford their own medical, dental, vision, life, and 401K on their own.
I hope I didn’t spoil your dreams of working at home. I just wanted to shed some light on the reality of it. You won’t find any fun and games here. No lounging at home while the paychecks roll in. Work is work regardless of your location. Good luck and much success to you.
